Eastern and central Meghalaya are mainly populated by the closely related Jaintia, Pnar and Khasi peoples, originally migrants from Southeast Asia. Despite their different ethnic backgrounds, these two groups use a matrilineal system of inheritance with children taking the mother s family name.
